Translation Sources Overview

Translation sources are sources with translation text (from a  file) or a provider for translations (MT). The types of a translation sources you can use can be very different (see 1-6). But, the use to find and get translations is commonly identical.

 

1. Translation Project: A source which we have naturally with RC-WinTrans  is a translation project. What's be translated already is a source for translations. Projects have usually also more the one target language and therefor translations for all of this target languages.

So, a project in progress, all existing projects can be used as translation source.

 

Translation Memory: A SDL Trados translation memory, included with RC-WinTrans is a classical translation source.  Also to save translations to.

 

2. TMX File: Translation Memory Exchange files you may have for translation by an agency or an external translator. The TMX file can be added and used as translation source.

Or: create a TMX file as translation source and use it as multilingual translation source and for saving translations to. It is supported one TMX file has translations for multiple languages.

Items added or exported to the TMX file by RC-WinTrans have also a unique resource item ID.

 

3. Excel: An Excel file you may also have for translation by an external translator.

Add it as translation source an get translations from the Excel table.  It is supported the Excel file has multiple languages columns.

The items, exported by RC-WinTrans to the Excel file have a unique resource item ID.

4. XLIFF 2 / QuickShip XML File:  Translation Memory Exchange files you may have for translation by an agency or an external translator. The file can be added and used as translation source.

The items added or exported to the file by RC-WinTrans have a unique resource item ID and further data as in the project.

 

5. Machine Translator:

The machine translator, started and running is automatically included as a translation source.

Create New -- Add Existing

Three types of translation source (.tmx, .xliffex. .sdltm) can be created new using the "File | New | Translation Source" menu command. Else, a translation source an be added by using the "File | Add | Translation Source " menu command.

 

Visibility and Activation

Translation sources available (projects excluded) are listed in the Translation Sources window.

A full list, including translation projects are in the Translation Sources dialog box. This is also a place to activate or deactivate a translation source.

 

Finally

All the single and different translation sources can be used together, commonly like one translation source. An activated translation source is  used when the languages fits to the current projects' source and target language.
