Monitoring:  Size and Position Changes

This chapter deals with layout adjustments that have been made for a target language that deviate from the original layout and the consequences of what needs to be done if changes are subsequently made to the source.  This review is necessary because adjustments for a language are retained even if the layout in the original changes again.

It is desirable to make or have to make as few layout adjustments as possible. This reduces the dependency on the layout of the source and the need to adapt the layout for a target language.

Achieving this requires reporting the size requirements for a translated text back to development in order to make a "tolerant" size design for a dialog element.

It's worth it. Less or no work for the future. No translation-related layout errors that are often only noticed late.

                    ---------------------------------------------------------------

So that changes to sizes and items are not overlooked and therefore remain unprocessed, several outputs and displays are active.  These are notices in the form of e.g: To-Do list, change window,  Information in the statistics.

Monitoring Output

1.

An adapted size/position were the source is changed comes added to the translation status statistic as a "changed source".

This indicates a target language is not fully translated.

2. The size/position item is listed in the "Changed Source" window.
3.  It affects the projects' translation status indication in the status bar.
4. The To-Do list makes note of this.
5. The "Statistic" dialog box lists the count of adapted size/position items explicitely.

What To-Do

What to do if a changed location or position is encountered?

The control element must be checked and the data edited or confirmed.

1.

The position and the size must be adjusted newly.

or

2.

In the simplest case, the existing position and size must be reset to the original. Resetting means deleting the values (position, size) for the language. Then, the size and the position of the original is used.

or

3.

At least, confirm the translation data as to be still valid -- OK.
Since the data are set to the translation status "changed source" they will be set to "translated".

For (1-3) and for a single Dialog Box Control, we have an example of what this looks like and what needs to be done.
